Basalt Glass

Basalt fibres are filament yarns produced from a liquid molten basalt by melt spinning. They are usually used in fibre-plastic composites or as heat protection material. For this project, the ultra-thin fibres were wound over cylinders and fixed with a natural glue.

The crystal glass was blown into the resulting cylinder at a temperature of around 1100 degrees. The heat and the pressure of the glass bubble deform the basalt fibre cylinder and the resulting glass object receives its characteristic net structure. Each glass is thus unique.
